Huawei Honor 6x Review

Introduction

After the success of Honor’s 5X last year, Huawei decided that is time for a successor. The new budget phone is named Huawei Honor 6x and comes with the “double or nothing” which is a reference to the dual cameras.

The new model comes with the same 5.5 inch at 1080p, 3 GB or 4 GB of RAM, HiSilicon Kirin 655 CPU and 32 GB or 64 GB of Internal storage. Seems that we still don’t have NFC connection and Quick Charge capability. The phone also comes with a larger battery size and the price was a bit raised.

Huawei Honor 6x back

The bad things about this model is the lack of NFC connectivity, doesn’t run on latest version of android, no USB-C port and the bland design.

Display

Huawei Honor 6x comes with a 5.5 inches IPS panel at 1080p resolution (403 ppi). The screen has a better color accuracy, darker blacks, better viewing angles, improved brightness and is 10% more efficient than his predecessor.

The display on Huawei Honor 6x scored maximum brightness of 579 nits, maximum contrast ratio of 1804 and reached the Color accuracy of a maximum deltaE at 7.9 on the white spectrum. The viewing angles and sunlight legibility are pretty good. However, there is a contrast shift when tilting the device forward or backward.

Software

Huawei Honor 6x runs on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow layered with EMUI 4.1. The company says that they will update the software with Android Nougat and EMUI 5.0 in Q2 2017.

The UI comes with a lot of customize options, like themes, ways to change widgets, wallpapers, change the number of apps per home screen, choose a page transition and much more.

Performance

Huawei Honor 6x is equipped with 3 GB or 4 GB RAM and a Kirin 655 octa-core chip. The chipset comes with four cores clocked at 2.1 GHz and four cores clocked at 1.7 GHz.

This CPU also comes with an i5 co-processor, required for minimal power tasks. This co-processor helps a lot the battery life and the power management. Kirin 655 is a mid-range CPU that has quite good performance, we can compare it with Snapdragon 430,  Helio P10, Snapdragon 617 and the higher-end Snapdragon 652.

Benchmark

  • GeekBench 4 (single-core) – 801
  • GeekBench 4 (CPU multi-core) – 3351
  • Basemark X – 8458
  • Basemark X (medium) – 16712
  • GFX 3.1 Car scene (onscreen) – 4.8
  • GFX 3.0 Manhattan (1080p offscreen) – 8.4
  • GFX 3.1 Manhattan (1080p offscreen) – 4.8
  • GFX 3.1 Car scene (offscreen) – 4.6
  • Basemark OS 2.0 – 1309
  • AnTuTu 6 – 57012

Camera

Huawei Honor 6x is one of the best smarphones on the market right now wen it comes to mid-range devices with a dual camera sensor. The phone comes with a 12 MP + a 2 MP depth sensor with laser-assisted AF and dual-tone LED flash. The main cameras took decent photos in good lighting conditions, but in conditions of low lighting, the textures look fuzzy, the white and color balance are bad and solid colors often come out noisy.

Selfies are made by an 8 MP camera. Photos made by it are quite decent with good level of detail and colors.

Battery

Huawei Honor 6x comes with a 3340 mAh battery that promises up to 2.2 days of endurance. Sadly, the phone doesn’t support Quick Charge technology. The battery charged up to 31% in 30 minutes and 57% in 1h.

  • 3G Talk Time – 23:06h
  • Web Browsing – 13:06h
  • Video Playback – 13:18h

Conclusion

Huawei Honor 6x has a quite god price-to-value ratio. The phone improved a lot of things over the Honor 5X like display quality, metal design, battery life, performance and ergonomics. The camera is quite good as weel for it’s price range.
